The reigning champions of a world custard pie competition failed to hold on to their title when they were beaten by a team called The Grannies.

Pien Smash lost out to four men dressed as old age pensioners, sporting zimmer frames and driving a mobility scooter, at today’s World Custard Pie Championships in the village of Coxheath, near Maidstone, Kent.

Brian Mortimer, one of the organisers, said 14 teams had taken part this year and 2,000 pies were thrown. (PA)

Fundraiser ran with broken foot

A charity fundraiser ran 47 miles non-stop from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and back again without realising he had a broken foot.

Scott Halliday, 36, ran for Norfolk cancer charity Big C but did not realise he had cracked a bone until he went to hospital with a swollen foot the day after his mammoth effort.

Scott told the Norwich Evening News: “I have always wanted to do something that saves someone’s life, no matter what happens to my body.” (PA)

Centenarian’s Segway treat

A great-grandmother-of-17 celebrated her 100th birthday by riding a Segway around an obstacle course.

Sylvia Frankton shocked her relatives by hopping on to the two-wheeled machine - which had been hired for younger members of the family.

“I had never even seen a Segway before but I just wanted a go as soon as I set eyes on it, it was amazing,” the centenarian, from Holbeach, Lincolnshire, said. (PA)

California man returns $125,000

A California man who found a bag containing $125,000 said he returned the cash to the armoured truck company that accidentally dropped it because it was the 'right thing to do.' Joe Cornell, 52, told the Fresno Bee newspaper he saw the bag of cash fall out of the back of a Brinks armoured cash transport car as it drove over railroad tracks in downtown Fresno on Thursday afternoon. Jailed for dine-and-dash binge

A Baltimore man who police say routinely scammed restaurants by eating and then faking a seizure to get out of paying his bill was sentenced Friday to five years in prison.

Andrew Palmer, 47, had defrauded dozens of restaurants, from casual to upscale, according to Baltimore Police. Court papers show that Palmer was arrested 80 times and had 40 convictions since 1985, mostly on theft-of-service counts. (Reuters)

Woman charged with licking food

A kitchen employee at a women's halfway house has been charged with three counts of battery on a peace officer for licking sandwich cheese and ice cubes and serving them to probation and parole officers at the centr, according to court documents.

Yolanda Arguello, 59, was employed at the South Valley New Mexico Women's Recovery Academy in Albuquerque as a contract employee, said Alex Tomlin, spokeswoman for the New Mexico Department of Corrections. (Reuters)

Salesman stole skin from hospital

A Pennsylvania skin-graft salesman is facing charges that he stole $350,000 worth of human skin from a Philadelphia hospital over a period of nearly two years, police said yesterday. Gary Dudek, 54, is accused of stealing sheets of lab-grown skin intended for use in skin-graft surgeries from Mercy Philadelphia Hospital between November 2011 and July 2013, a local police spokeswoman said.
