A 59-year-old hunter from the US has been shot and killed during a bear hunt in Canada.

Shirley Cooper, of Longview, Washington, told the Longview Daily News that her husband Jeff had been hunting a grizzly bear with guides in British Columbia.

She says she was notified of his death by the Cowlitz County Chaplaincy in Longview after Canadian police contacted local authorities.

Canadian police are investigating the incident, which happened on Monday in a remote forest service area.

The man's family told the newspaper he wounded a grizzly on Sunday night and tracked the bear down the next morning with two guides.

The bear charged the group, and all fired. A bullet struck and killed Mr Cooper.
