Roberta Metsola has been re-elected to the European Parliament, the first Nationalist candidate to be elected from last Saturday's elections.

Dr Metsola was elected early this morning on the 16th count. She benefited from the transfer of votes of Nationalist candidates Jonathan Shaw, Helga Ellul, Kevin Cutajar and Stefano Mallia.

This is the first time that Dt Metsola, a lawyer specialising in EU affairs, has been elected directly. She came close to being elected in 2009 and was eventually elected in a casual election a year ago to replace Simon Busuttil when he became PN leader.

The counting of votes started at noon on Sunday and has been proceeding slowly at Naxxar counting hall.

Labour's Miriam Dalli is expected to be elected next, joining Alfred Sant who was elected from the first count.

Incumbent David Casa (PN) is expected to be re-elected while on the Labour list Marlene Mizzi also appears to be in line to keep her seat.

The destination of the final seat is still unclear. Should it go to Labour, the contest will be between incumbent Joseph Cuschieri and Gozitan Clint Camilleri, both of whom have been making progress from vote transfers.

Should the seat go to the PN, former minister Francis Zammit Dimech appears to be the favourite to get it.
