Surprises were not predicted when the day dawned yesterday but, by the afternoon, many could not believe the scale of the Labour Party’s landslide victory in the EP elections.
In under an hour, Labour supporters were already outside the party headquarters in Ħamrun celebrating a majority of more than 30,000 votes, a result the Prime Minister described as “humbling”.
Although both Labour and the Nationalist observers were assured they would get three seats each in the run-up to the European Parliament election, until last night the sixth seat was still in the balance and could go either way. The faces of party officials at the counting hall in Naxxar said it all: some were sad, others were jubilant.
