Lufthansa marked the 30th anniversary of its Malta service in style, not only by sporting a vintage aircraft livery and cabin crew uniforms but also reporting a growth exceeding 30 per cent in 2013 and a bullish outlook for this year.

“Lufthansa and Malta have now been a true success story for 30 years,” said Frank van den Steen, general manager for North Africa, Senegal and Malta.

“Especially the last year was overwhelming with more than 180,000 passengers on board our planes from and to the islands of the Knights, that is a growth exceeding 30 per cent and outperforming any other market of the Lufthansa network.

“Also, for 2014, we are looking into more than 1,300 flights. With the double-daily connections to Frankfurt and the additional Munich operations, our growth will be above 10 per cent.”

Lufthansa and Malta have been a true success story

Lufthansa services to Malta started on March 31, 1984, with a weekly flight operated by a Boeing 737.

In 1986, frequency increased to three and then five flights per week.

In 1993, Lufthansa Cargo was established as an independent company and, a year later, a joint venture agreement was signed between Lufthansa Technik and Air Malta.

Lufthansa Technik Malta (LTM) was founded in 2002 as a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG (92 per cent) and Air Malta (eight per cent).
