Around 250 first-year students at Sir Michelangelo Refalo Sixth Form, Victoria, took part in the school’s annual Health Day programme, which this year had the added aim of collecting donations to buy a defibrillator for the school.

The students had a choice between joining in ‘A walk for Life’ through Wied Żejta or taking part in discussions on healthy lifestyles, healthy eating, cyber bullying and sexually transmitted infections. The activities were led by Eileen Vella, Josefa Spiteri, Sergeant Joseph Muscat and Dr John Xuereb Dingli respectively.

Josianne Becker from the Breast Care Support group gave a talk on breast cancer awareness while nurses offered blood pressure, body mass index and glucose tests on the school premises at the event.

A selection of healthy food was also offered to the students during the day.

On her own initiative, sixth former Francesca Mercieca designed and created bracelets and sold them with the help of other students, with part of the proceeds going towrds the defibrillator and part being donated to Puttinu Cares.
