The University’s Institute for Tourism, Travel and Culture (ITTC) is to launch two new master’s programmes, institute director Nadia Theuma has announced.

The MA in Cultural Sustainability and Tourism is a five-semester part-time evening programme that offers a holistic approach to the study of heritage, culture and society with a link to cultural tourism. Meanwhile, the MA in International Tourism and Hospitality Management is a part-time evening course that will run over two academic years. The institute enables students to carry out doctoral research in the areas of tourism, travel and culture.

Besides its BA (Hons) in Tourism Studies, the ITTC also offers a Certificate Course in Food Culture, a part-time two-semester evening course providing a broad interdisciplinary perspective on knowledge of food. On successful completion of the course, students can proceed with studies leading to a Diploma in Food Culture, and even a Higher Diploma in Food Culture.

The institute is also currently involved in four EU-funded projects. The Heland project is aimed at promoting socio-economic sustainable development; the Soto project seeks to develop social entrepreneurship; another project, Hisa, aims to develop heritage interpretation for senior audiences, while Tostodem aims at developing sustainable tourism models in Malta and Sardinia.

Sophie Vella, 20, is a 2nd year student in the B. Communications (Hons) with English course and writes for Insite Malta.
