Q: As a consumer, I’m aware that some local retailers officially offer a price match policy, especially those in electronics/technology. Some sellers apply such a policy unofficially. In fact, I know someone who has recently purchased a mobile phone from a shop who found the same mobile phone at a cheaper price and the seller gave her the price difference.

Does the price match policy also apply in other product sectors? As consumers, are we legally entitled to request such a refund?

A: The price match policy is a voluntary policy. Hence, retailers are not legally obliged to provide a refund if consumers buy the same product at a lower price from another seller.

The free market economy gives sellers the freedom to decide how much they sell their products. The only legal obligation sellers have is to clearly display prices so that consumers can compare and make informed buying decisions.
