L-Anġlu tal-Lament is a new, contemporary Maltese novel where James Oldens is introduced as a weird character who meets the narrator on an business flight to Lisbon.

A particular friendship is born between the two with James’s declaration that he is soon going to die.

During this personal journey we come across James’s contrasting past of physical, emotional and sexual abuse as opposed to creativity, dreams, angels and spirituality in a context of both the normal and the incredible.

All this information leads the narrator to pass through trying moments which leads to a blurring of characters , as the narrator is also being confronted by his own past.

Located in a retro-chic Lisbon and involving a web of colourful characters, this novel evokes a dynamic set of emotions flirting from a dramatic context of childhood recollections to a present enhanced by creativity, illusion and thought.

Towards the end it is the reader who is to decide James’s fate.

L-Anġlu tal-Lament is a topical novel which is occasionally shrouded in mystery but which is mainly unreserved, explicit and without hesitation.
