Labour MP Luciano Busuttil has added a €4,600 car allowance to the annual revenue he receives from his political posts, according to information given in Parliament this week.
The former Ħamrun mayor is already paid €13,976 a year for chairing the Malta Sports Council, €10,302 for being the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs and €20,604 as his MP’s honorarium.
The car allowance, in his role as chairman of the sports council, pushes his total earnings to €49,482 a year from political positions. This is more than €4,000 above a minster’s pay.
The information on his new allowance came in reply to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Charlo Bonnici, which was answered by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo.
Only a month before, replying to an identical question by PN MP Chris Said, Mr Bartolo had said Mr Busuttil’s chairmanship role was his only extra remuneration.
The positions are all part-time, as backbenchers are still allowed to continue with their full-time professions – a lawyer in Dr Busuttil’s case.
