The family of late Prime Minister Dom Mintoff have been awarded compensation of €24,200 by the Land Arbitration Board following the expropriation of a property in Triq l-Ajkla, Cospicua.

The case was instituted by Mr Mintoff, his daughters, brothers and other members of this family.

The property was expropriated in November 2006 when the government had offered the family €10,482.

The family contested the amount, saying it did not reflect the real value of the property, which was €37,269. They made their valuation on the basis of a report by architect Edwin Mintoff.

The property consisted of a shop with an overlying tenement. The shop had an area of 24 square metres.

Board chairman Magistrate Giovanni Grixti after considering reports by two architects appointed by the board, as well as the family's valuation, decided that the property was structurally sound and was worth €24,200 at the time of the expropriation.
