The Down Under tour by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has sparked a booking bonanza by Britons wanting breaks in Australia.

There has been a 120 per cent increase in booking enquiries since the tour by the royal couple and their son Prince George, according to tour company Austravel.

During the visit, the company received a new enquiry every seven minutes and had to bring in extra staff to cope with demand.

Sydney is the most popular destination for Britons wanting to head Down Under, followed by Port Douglas on the Queensland coast and then Melbourne. Austravel general manager Karen Joyce said: “The Kate Middleton effect strikes again, but this time it’s not the latest dress the nation is after, it’s a holiday. “We have seen a huge demand from travellers looking to replicate that of the recent royal tour.”
