The electronic handling of information is a defining technology of our age. Enormous volumes of information are routinely stored and transmitted worldwide. Indeed, most aspects of our daily lives would come to a halt should our information infrastructure fail. Thus, the study of countermanding real and serious threats to information has grown rapidly, embracing studies in cryptography, computer security and fraud detection, as well as considering the management of security and the many trade-offs and subjective issues that need to be addressed when implementing information security within an organisation.

Computer-based crime is also a growing problem, and society’s battle against traditional crime using computer systems to avoid detection, and criminal rings are devolving into the new virtual underground of white collar crime. Policing the internet has spawned new careers in law and order, requiring new skills such as computer forensics and internet snooping which were only contemplated in science fiction in the recent past.

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education is at the forefront in offering the very best qualifications for Maltese students in information security. Through the international programmes of the University of London, students have read the MSc in information security led by the Information Security Group at the Royal Holloway (www.royalholloway.ac.uk/isg/home.aspx), one of the largest groups of academic security researchers in the world. The MSc is an interdisciplinary, flexible course taught by the faculty of the Information Security Group and security experts from industry. It is a non-mathematical course and provides students with a systematic understanding and critical awareness of current threats to the security of electronic information and the measures available to counteract these. It is designed to introduce all technical, legal and commercial aspects of information security and is intended as a foundation for a career in the field.

Students can study the field of security and other computer or business related areas at undergraduate level through the BSc (Hons) in computing and information systems selecting the security specialisation. This degree is conferred by the University of London, led by Goldsmiths College, with tuition provided on full time or as an evening course at Saint Martin’s Institute, an affiliate centre for the University of London and licensed as a higher education institution by the National Commission for Further and Higher Education.

The institute also offers programmes from the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, which has more than 100,000 constituents in 180 countries. ISACA (www.isaca.org) is a leading global provider of knowledge, certifications, community, advocacy and education on information systems assurance and security, enterprise governance and management of IT, and IT-related risk and compliance. ISACA continually updates and expands the practical guidance and product family based on the COBIT framework which helps IT professionals and enterprise leaders fulfill their IT governance and management responsibilities, particularly in the areas of assurance, security, risk and control, and deliver value to the business. The Institute organises courses which lead students to sit for the respected certified information systems auditor, certified information security manager, certified in the governance of enterprise IT and certified in risk and information systems control designations.
