A new supply teacher has been assigned to the Żabbar primary school classroom deemed to be “unmanageable”.

Malta Union of Teachers’ president Kevin Bonello said no reports had been received that would justify implementing a directive the MUT warned it would issue if things did not improve.

Earlier this week, he said the situation at the school had become untenable after a Year 2 class teacher made a six-year-old boy kneel down in the playground in the presence of the other students in March.

Since the incident, the situation got worse and the teacher – who had been disciplined after admitting to the incident – was not being allowed to move on and do her job, he said.

When contacted yesterday, Mr Bonello said that, so far, the union had no reason to proceed with the walk-out directive.

The class teacher was sick and had “an open certificate” so a supply teacher was brought in.

“I just want to stress what we are not blaming the teacher or the boy in question… but the situation has become untenable,” he said, adding that the union had been contacted by several parents who felt the same way.

An Education Ministry spokesman confirmed a supply teacher had been employed and said “the ministry is keeping all channels of communication open with all parties and discussions are still ongoing”.
