Two Defender Class inshore patrol boats and towing vehicles were officially inaugurated at the Armed Forces of Malta’s Maritime Squadron yesterday.

The new assets have been donated by the US government and AFM commander Brig. Jeffrey Curmi highlighted “excellent” relations between the Maltese military at the US Embassy as well as with the American military services.

He noted that the US administration allocated funds to help the AFM and Maltese military personnel also benefited from courses offered by Washington.

“I know these boats have saved 3,000 lives. We’re really thrilled to support Malta as you continue this important work. It’s a great partnership,” US Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley said.

One boat was deployed to Gozo to join an AFM search and rescue launch, while the other was sent to Greece to support a detachment of Maritime Squadron personnel who conducted patrols off the island of Lesvos.
