The Malta Racing Club will host an International Championship for female drivers this evening at the racetrack in Marsa.

In 2011 and 2012, female drivers took part in international races organised by the club with the backing of sponsors Equality and the Malta Sports Council, but this year’s event is bigger.

In fact, 12 women from eight countries, including Malta, will be competing in two races from the Copper and Silver categories during which they will be awarded points according to their placings.

The driver with the best total after the two races will be declared winner.

The foreign participants hail from France, Sweden, Finland, The Netherlands, Italy, Estonia and Slovenia.

Among the contenders is Dutch girl Pamela Westgeest who won the international race in Malta in 2012.

Malta will be represented by Laura Cunningham.

Apart from the races and other activities, the Malta Racing Club deemed it fit to link this event with a good cause and invited Europa Donna Malta to raise awareness about breast cancer among women.

Several distinguished guests have already confirmed their participation, including US Ambassador Gina K. Abercrombie-Winstanley and Dutch Ambassador Rita Dulci Rahman.

Today’s racing programme starts at 6.30pm and the International Championship races will be the fifth and seventh on the card.
