France has once again come out ahead of all the other wine-producing countries after topping the overall medals chart at the 31st International Wine Challenge.
Assortments of French wines from all over the country were awarded a total of 1,987 medals, including113 golds by the prestigious wine competition held in London.
Its closest rival, Australia, won 75 golds out of a total of 890 medals, with Italy in third place, winning 628, but with only 28 golds. They were closely followed by Portugal which won a respectable 603 medals, including an impressive 55 golds by comparison.
France’s gold medal wins were spread across a diversity of wine styles and grape varieties from all over the country. Nineteen different grape varieties picked up gold medals including noble favourites like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but even lesser-known varieties won gold from grapes such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Gros Manseng and Jacquere. The Champagne region won more golds than any other region in the world, with a total of 40 gold medals.
