This year’s popular San Michel team tournament at Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club (VLTC) came to an end last week.

The competition attracted a record participation of 78 men and 48 women, a fitting recognition of San Michel’s constant contribution towards the development of the game in Malta, the VLTC said in a statement.

Players were grouped in six teams, captained by Diane D’Alessandro (Team A), Grace Barbara (Team B), Victor Rutter (Team C), Christine Scerri (Team D), Neville Cassar (Team E) and Olivia Belli (Team F).

The tournament was played over 12 weeks with teams meeting each other over two rounds and the top four eventually progressing to the knockout stage.

In the semi-finals, D’Alessandro’s side overcame the stiff resistance offered by Cassar’s players while Rutter’s team got the better of that led by Belli.

The final, played on VLTC’s San Michel Centre Court, was a hard-fought encounter in which Rutter’s team carried the honours after prevailing over the outfit led by D’Alessandro 8-6.

VLTC thanked sponsors Simonds Farsons Cisk for giving club members the possibility to enjoy themselves at the San Michel tournament which served as a weekend breaker during the winter months.
