Lino Spiteri’s Talking Point , ‘Dirty politics become dirtier’ (May 12), may make interesting reading for its support of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s shocking defence of Cyrus Engerer following his conviction for a gruesome homophobic act.

Spiteri condones Muscat’s behaviour that turned an aggressor into a victim. I would have expected the respected columnist to disagree strongly with Muscat’s behaviour. Instead, the former Labour minister rushed to defend the Prime Minister who deserves nothing but condemnation for his behaviour.

An online poll by Times of Malta shows that the majority of its readers are against Muscat’s decision to defend Engerer after his conviction; so are the absolute majority of the independent media – and independent columnists.

Not so Spiteri, who prides himself with being an independent columnist but who has now exposed himself as being a Muscat apologist.
