Cataract operations waiting times are going to be slashed through optimal use of resources at Mater Dei Hospital as well as investment in new equipment, health Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne said today.

He said that the waiting time for these operations would be going down to one year by 2015 and to four months by summer 2016, as recommended by international standards. The current waiting time for cataract surgery is close to two years.

The government said in a statement that there were currently 3,195 patients waiting for an operation.

The initiative to reduce waiting times formed part of the government's commitment to reduce operation waiting times.
