The obituary of Nestor Jacono, “Malta’s first Olympian” was slightly incorrect. Malta’s first Olympian was the late Austin Cassar Torreggiani.

He participated in the Olympics held in Berlin just before the start of the Second World War, during the time of Adolph Hitler. I have a photo of him with the famous Jesse Owens.

Hitler had refused to shake hands with Owens because of the colour of his skin. For the sake of accuracy, in the photo showing Nestor and the standard bearer, it was not Alfred but Francis Zammit Cutajar who was carrying the flag.
