Combination skin may be a tricky affair, with dry or ‘normal’ areas and oily skin in other parts of the face, such as the T-zone.

One might think the best thing is to use suitable products for the different areas, but Graziella Fava of Chemimart Ltd believes this is not viable.

“We do not believe anyone has the luxury of such time to stay playing around with skincare products. Manufacturers today can target the different needs of a woman,” she says.

For daily cleansing, Ms Fava suggests gel or cream products rather than foam.

“Foam is applied with water, which can have a drying effect. Normal to combination skin is usually sensitive and creams and gel are better because they are milder cleansers.”

Moisturiser is a must, as with any skin type: “Whether you have combination, dry, oily or normal skin, moisturiser acts as a barrier and protects the skin. It also delays the signs of ageing.”

A good sunscreen should form part of daily skincare. The higher the protection factor, the better in order to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays, which may lead to pigmentation and premature skin ageing, among other cosmetic problems. Ms Fava recommends the use of sunscreen all year round.

As regards make-up, one should opt for oil-free products which “stay on for a longer period of time”.

Whatever the skin type, Ms Fava says it is important to start taking care of our skin from a young age “because if wrinkles appear, no cream will solve the problem”.

One’s diet is also very important: “Eat fruit, vegetables and drink plenty of water so that the skin remains hydrated, slowing down signs of ageing.”
