A group of 28 Form 1 and 2 students, accompanied by teachers from Stella Maris College, Gżira, recently took part in a hands-on science weekend in Gozo during which they were engaged in collaborative learning tasks in real-life situations.

During the event, students experienced various applications of science in everyday life and at the same time observed scientific processes in organised tasks. It also helped the students experience teamwork and the spirit of community sharing and collaboration.

One of the students’ first tasks was to carry out a survey among Gozo ferry passengers about the use of science in their lives.

For their first supper, the students had to make dough from scratch to prepare pizzas, which were then taken to be baked at David’s Bakery, Kerċem.

The group also went to the arts school in Għajnsielem where they visited Alda Bugeja’s weaving and looming workshop. Adult students studying this craft shared their skills with the students and teachers. They observed fabric testing and investigations for flammability, strength and insulation, and also planted cotton seedlings.

While visiting a farmer at his workshop to learn about the process involved in the production of the traditional Gozitan ġbejna, the students were given the opportunity to milk a goat. This was followed by a visit to the shooting range in Żebbuġ and the salt pans in Ta’ Xwejni.

The group ventured out an evening orienteering session from Marsalforn, during which the lack of light pollution made the star constellations look intensely bright and prompted discussions between the students and teachers regarding the meaning behind Earth Hour.

The two days of scientific on-site learning ended with a plenary session during which students made presentations on the activities undertaken.
