The United Nations High Commission for Refugees and the International Organisation for Migration have pledged their help to Malta on migration.

This will involve technical assistance, training and sharing of good practices, particularly in the field of migrant and refugee children.

The announcement was made yesterday by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca in her concluding address of a three-day conference focusing on irregular migration.

The event was hosted by the President’s Office at San Anton Palace and was attended by representatives from civil society, government ministries and Church authorities.

The UNHCR and the IOM welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to keep migrant children out of detention.

They highlighted the fact that one of the biggest challenges of irregular migration was its unpredictability.
