The i-MiEV, which stands for intelligent Mitsubishi Electric Vehicle, is one of the first full electric vehicles to be offered in Malta that utilises Lithium-ion battery technology. Go all electric and you’ll avoid fuel costs and eliminate trips to the fuel station. That’s because the design philosophy behind the i-MiEV is based on three factors – ecology, economy and comfort.
Running on 100 per cent electricity for zero CO2 emissions eliminates the pollution that would have been otherwise generated by a conventional motor.
The i-MiEV is very economical to operate. Depending on driving styles and use of auxiliary equipment such as heating and air conditioning, costs can be as little as 20 per cent of costs to run a petrol car of a similar size. Also less maintenance is needed, resulting in even more savings. Furthermore, registration fees are low and it also benefits from zero annual road tax.
The i-MiEV is also very comfortable. It is a four-door vehicle that seats four people comfortably. It has a strong acceleration and charging it is a breeze. It has the option of being charged direct from a 13 amp domestic socket or from one of the 50 current charging points that the government has installed around the country.
An additional 50 charging points are planned to be installed this year, therefore ensuring you are never too far from a charging point.
Depending on the driving style and use of auxiliary equipment, the range of the i-MiEV in Malta can top 150 kilometres. Calculations indicate that the average local motorist drives about 22 km a day or 154 km a week.
Therefore, a single charge should last roughly a week. With the i-MiEV’s on-board charging module, charging from a domestic socket will give a full charge from completely flat in about seven hours. Hooking up to a quick charger will allow the car to achieve an 80 per cent charge in about 30 minutes.
A turning circle of only 4.5m makes the i-MiEV extremely manoeuvrable, and because there is no internal combustion engine the vehicle is also very quiet.
Mitsubishi Motors have been developing and selling electric vehicles since 1966, and the i-MiEV is a result of the long experience the company has gained over the years.
