Last Wednesday, St George’s Day, various initiatives were held to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the creation of the statue of St George by P. P. Azzopardi. It was the first processional titular statue of Gozo’s patron saint and is considered a masterpiece.

Maltapost used a special postmark, designed by Anthony Grech, while St George’s Basilica, the Gozo Philatelic Society and George Cassar Jnr of Studio 23 issued commemorative cards with personalised stamps and covers.

An exhibition called Beatus Georgius, organised by St George’s parish at Dar Leħen il-Belt Victoria on St George’s Square, will remain open until next Sunday.
