Reports suggest that crime in Malta is steadily rising. What do you think?

It is true that lately there have been more fights at the places of youth entertainment reported in the newspapers. There has also been a marked rise in petty theft, such as a mugging, as well as several large hold-ups and murders recently. Jonathan Camilleri, 21, B.Eng. (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 4th year.

Since the islands’ population is increasing it is only logical for the crime rate to rise in proportion. However I wish crime does not increase as it is detrimental to society’s health. Stefano Fenech, 21, Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, 3rd year.

Media exposure plays a huge part in this. Besides us being more aware of what goes on around us, we have also become more influenced by what goes on around us. Michela Mifsud, 21, Mcast BA Graphic Design and Interactive Media.

There was recently another violent incident in Paceville. How safe do you feel safe on a night out in Paceville?

I feel quite safe, even though a lot of fights occur in the area, some of which are serious. One has to look for a fight to end up having one. If you respect others and behave decently no one will bother you. Why would someone pick a fight with you if you haven’t done anything to them? It doesn’t make sense. Jonathan Camilleri

Safety in Paceville is all up to you. If you know how to avoid trouble, good; if not, learn how to. I feel quite safe in Paceville as I take care of myself and avoid fights. Stefano Fenech

There have always been bar fights in Paceville. I think the recent one was taken way too far and it is not acceptable behaviour, but I wouldn’t say it makes me feel unsafe. Michela Mifsud

What needs to change? What improvements would you suggest?

Security staff (bouncers) at establishments in the area should be trained and subject to regulation and law enforcement. It would benefit bouncers to learn how to handle fights and youths visiting the area for a night out would also benefit. Bouncers should be liable if they handle a situation inappropriately and hurt people badly, as has happened several times in the past. Jonathan Camilleri

It’s all about attitude and reactions to problems that arise. Some people choose the moral way while others choose the immoral way. Education plays a vital role, but one is more influenced by friends and family; so to improve the situation there must be a change in society. Stefano Fenech

Although there is surveillance at certain hours of the night in Paceville, it must be taken to the next level. Apart from that, it should be tackled through education, by teaching youths that crime is bad. Michela Mifsud
