The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses said this morning it cannot accept the government’s anti-democratic behaviour in its regard and will take all the necessary action to ensure justice.

It said in a statement that it had requested the government to acknowledge it had sole recognition for social workers in the public service, including those at Karen Grech Hospital.

It had also called for a suspension of discussions with another union as it enjoyed majority support. However, the government continued with its negotiations.

The MUMN said that although last week it was promised by the Office of the Prime Minister that this matter was to be discussed during a meeting, this did not take place.

It said it would not accept the situation and was calling an urgent meeting for members to decide how to proceed.

The union retained the right to request the reopening of negotiations especially on issues that would not be acceptable to the social workers.

It said it was still open to a solution to be found to the matter.
