Mosta and Sliema Wanderers will end their tussle for fourth spot in the Premier League standings today as the final programme of the campaign gets underway in three different venues.
Fourth place could mean European football for Mosta if Birkirkara are crowned champions on Saturday and Valletta win the FA Trophy next week. In that scenario, Enrico Piccioni’s team would be awarded a place in the Europa League qualifiers.
With that in mind Mosta will be determined to clinch all points from their match against Balzan in Corradino to seal fourth spot and hope the end-of-season results could go their way.
The Blues will be almost at full strength with Cameroon defender Jonas Ekani the only absentee as he starts serving a three-match ban.
Balzan midfielder Pedrinho is out due to a one-match ban.
Sliema will fancy their chances of beating a depleted Hibs side at the National Stadium and hope Balzan produce another sound defensive display against Mosta.
But even if they miss out on fourth spot the Wanderers can still qualify for Europe.
In fact, Alfonso Greco’s team will seal their Europa League place if they beat Valletta in the Trophy final or even as beaten finalists if the Citizens win the league.
Today, the Wanderers will be without Argentine midfielder Mathias Muchardi who was handed a one-match ban yesterday.
Hibs will be without three key players as defender Igor Radusinovic and striking duo Luis Edison and Obinna Obiefule are banned.
The other two matches today, Floriana vs Rabat Ajax and Qormi vs Tarxien at the Centenary Stadium, are dead rubbers as the other team to join the Magpies in Division One next season will be decided tomorrow when Naxxar face Vittoriosa in a do-or-die relegation battle.
