Frank Farina has paid the price for Sydney FC’s fifth-place finish in the A-League and early finals exit, with the club opting to terminate his contract.

The 49-year-old reportedly had a deal to remain in charge next season, despite it having previously been claimed that he needed to secure a spot in the top four to earn an extension.

But his failure to do so, followed by last Friday’s 2-1 elimination final defeat away to Melbourne Victory, has sealed the fate of the former Australia boss.

Farina took over from Ian Crook in November 2012, but could only take Sydney to seventh in 2012-13.

Liverpool will splash the cash

Liverpool are planning a summer spending spree to add to their squad – with managing director Ian Ayre confident the pull of Champions League football will help them attract their targets.

Brendan Rodgers’s side are favourites for the Premier League title and have already guaranteed themselves a place in next season’s Champions League group stage.

“There is no question we always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad that we have needed for this year when we were not playing in Europe,” Ayre told national newspapers.

“It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy.”

Camacho signs new Malaga deal

Ignacio Camacho has ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract at Malaga.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a host of clubs in recent weeks but said he was committed to the Spanish side he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

“The club makes me feel extremely valued,” Camacho said after penning terms until the summer of 2019.

“I’m so thankful to the club for making such a big effort, and I’d like to thank everyone here for all their hard work. I’m extremely grateful to the club for making everything so easy for me.”

Nuremberg sack coach Verbeek

Bundesliga strugglers Nuremberg sacked coach Gertjan Verbeek yesterday, hoping a late change at the top will help the former champions stave off relegation with just three games remaining in the season.

The 51-year-old Dutchman took over last October but managed just five wins in 22 matches as Nuremberg slumped to 17th place, one point above last-placed Eintracht Braunschweig and one behind Hamburg, who occupy the relegation play-off spot.

Nuremberg’s recent form has seen them secure just one victory in their last nine games.

Youth coach Roger Prinzen has been named as interim manager until the end of the season.

Scholes to assist Giggs at United

Paul Scholes has been added to Ryan Giggs’s backroom staff at Manchester United.

Giggs was appointed United interim manager following the sacking of David Moyes on Tuesday.

The Welshman installed Nicky Butt and Phil Neville as first-team coaches, and it has now emerged that Scholes has returned to the club to assist his former team-mate.

“It’s great to see Paul Scholes here at the Aon Training Complex today, assisting Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville,” read a post on Manchester United’s Twitter.

Cech, Terry to miss rest of EPL season

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right elbow in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg.

Captain John Terry will also be sidelined for the last three Premier League games of the campaign after twisting his ankle in the second half but he could be fit for next month’s Champions League final in Lisbon if Chelsea get through.

Cech was replaced by Mark Schwarzer at the Vicente Calderon after Atletico midfielder Raul Garcia took a tumble and felled the keeper at a corner.

“Petr Cech was knocked over. I don’t remember which player it was but he has an injury that means his season is over,” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said.

“And John...we’ll have to get to the final for him to be able to play again this season.”

Guidolin looking for different role

Francesco Guidolin is considering taking a break from coaching next season and move into a different role at Udinese.

The experienced tactician has endured his most difficult season since joining Udinese in 2010 and reports have linked him with a move away from the club.

However, Guidolin, who is under contract until June 2017, has no intention to leave.

“My rapport with this club is a sincere and loyal one,” he said.

“I speak on a daily basis with our president regarding the future projects and, at the end of the season, we will decide what is the best road to take.

“We are evaluating several possibilities with the right serenity.”
