The Youth Specialisation Studies Scheme (YSSS) offers an opportunity for students to avail themselves of a soft loan at subsidised interest rates, aimed at assisting them to take up specialised courses that are not available in Malta.

The scheme is run through the collaboration between APS Bank and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and has been extended for three more years. YSSS has been running for the past 20 years and 371 students have benefited from it so far.

YSSS is available for students between 18 and 30 years old. Loan amounts range from €10,000 to €30,000, repayable over a maximum term of 10 years. A number of benefits are included in the YSSS, including a maximum moratorium of five years on the capital repayment.

The closing date for applications for the YSSS is June 13.

MITA will invest around €14,000 in a mobile application challenge, which would be used by the Majjistral Park in the north of Malta.

MITA has already provided six computers, networking and technical support which have made it possible for visitors to browse information prior to starting a tour at the Majjistral Park.

Participants have to submit their concepts and proposals by June 20. The concepts will be evaluated by judges, who will short-list the two best concepts. In the second part of the challenge, the shortlisted teams will have to continue developing their concept with the help of professionals during a summer placement at MITA, envisaged to start early July and run till the end of September 2014. The short-listed teams will benefit from hands-on technical support and mentoring by experts to transform the app concept into a fully functional app.

At the end of the placement, the winning team will receive a cash prize of €2,000.

Teams should register their participation by May 9.
