Sirens ASC announced they have engaged former Romania national team swimmer Catalin Ioan Stan as coach of the club’s top squad.

“We are delighted that Stan has agreed to join us and coach our top squad,” Sirens ASC chairman Neil Galea said.

“His passion for the sport is completely in line with our ideals for our young swimmers in the team and not just the elite group.

“Our club’s swimming potential has grown significantly over the past few years and the new coach’s prowess adds an exciting new dimension to the Sirens swimmers.”

Born in Bucharest, Romania, Stan’s career started when he was six years old after a coach spotted him during a school swimming meeting.

Years of hard work put him on the podium at the Romanian national championships in the 200m individual medley and 800m freestyle.

After juggling school with sport, Stan then took courses in Sports and Fitness in his country and England before joining Romania’s University of Sport. His studies continued at the University of Malta where Stan has undertaken courses in Sport Management and Aqua Aerobic Fitness.

Stan’s coaching career includes stints with Sliema ASC, Phoenix and Club 2000 Romania where his squads regularly achieved medal positions in national and international competitions.

“Swimming is a tough sport but I expect the utmost commitment and effort from my squad,” Stan said.

“The ambitions at Sirens echoes my own, so I’m extremely pleased with this opportunity to help raise these swimmers to another level.

“I’m supported by a professional and well organised head coach in Daniela Deguara and I appreciate the efforts made by the club to hold regular social activities for the children.

“A swimmer’s routine is hard and sometimes isolating, so the chance to integrate and bond as a team is vital.”
