A group of young performers from the GymStars Gymnastics Club recently travelled to the UK for an international competition and returned home with an impressive haul of medals.

The group included members from the club’s developing squad.

Among the results registered by the GymStars youngsters were 16 first places and four overall trophies. In all, they won 51 medals.

Gymnasts between the ages of seven and 12 participated in different levels and categories.

The Maltese team was under the charge of coaches Plamen Peynov, Antonina Uzunova and Ivelin Ivanov.

All three are former Bulgaria national team members with work background from organised sports schools in Sofia.

Junior squad: Ella Borg, Mae Farrugia, Mirae Micallef, Erika Ertugrul and Michela Vella.

Pre-junior squad: Rihanna Sullivan, Flor de Maria Sciberras, Martina Caruana, Hannah Grech and Aiyana Piscopo.

Pre-basic squad: Julia Magri, Krista Bajada, Kaya Bonello, Leah Barber, Shania Lou Degiorgio, Valentina Marchi and Bilge Oyku Mert.

Development squad: Ylena Muscat and Sophie Zammit.

GymStars are now in the process of preparing Kirsty Caruana and Adreana Zammit for the Commonwealth Championships.

The two senior members of the team will travel to Glasgow this week with international Brevet judge Francesca Borg and coaches Peynov and Uzunova.

Meanwhile, GymStars will be holding another series of different sport activities – the Go Active Club – this summer.

Children from three to 14 years can practice any of the activities in programme. They will be supervised by specialised and qualified coaches.
