Rugby Union: Benji Marshall’s brief foray in rugby union is set to end after only one Super Rugby start with the former New Zealand rugby league skipper requesting a release from his Auckland Blues contract in order to return to the 13-man code. Marshall only agreed a two-year contract with the Blues in August in a bid to play for the All Blacks at next year’s rugby World Cup but he has struggled for game time under head coach John Kirwan, playing just 212 minutes this season.

Basket, NBA: Miami’s star players rose to the occasion as the Heat took a 1-0 lead in their first-round play-off series against Charlotte Bobcats with a 99-88 victory. LeBron James and Dwayne Wade contributed with 27 and 23 points respectively for the defending NBA champions, who were made to work for victory.

Golf: Miguel Angel Jimenez powered to victory on his Champions Tour debut after recording a two-shot win in the Greater Gwinnett Championship in Duluth. The 50-year-old Spaniard, who finished fourth in the Masters last week, continued to shine in Georgia with a wire-to-wire triumph. Jimenez posted a final round 67 to finish 14 under for the tournament, with closest challenger and defending champion Bernhard Langer two shots back.

Motor Sport: Yvan Muller claimed his first World Touring Car Championship victory for Citroen at Paul Ricard. The reigning champion, who was promoted to pole position after team-mates and fastest qualifiers Sebastien Loeb and Jose Maria Lopez were demoted after problems with their fuel cut-off systems, finished 12.7 seconds ahead of team-mate Loeb. Gabriele Tarquini’s Honda split the Citroens to finish third.
