Health Minister Konrad Mizzi said this morning that the reversal of a decision to split community services from services at Mount Carmel Hospital after just six months, was not a U-turn or an admission of mistake.

The decision, he said, was the result of an assessment to have the best possible structure in mental health.

Mr Mizzi was replying to questions from timesofmalta.com during a walkabout at the Vittoriosa open market.

Last week, former Mount Carmel CEO Dolores Gauci had her job terminated as head of the community services section at the end of her one-year probation period. Ms Gauci had initially been engaged as a CEO but was replaced last September by Labour candidate Clifton Grima.

The health minister said that the decision to have one chief was taken in consultation with clinicians and the unions. He added that the ministry was working on a new organisational structure for the health sector.
