The Samsung Galaxy S5 was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to an eager crowd waiting for news of the new flagship Android phone. They weren’t disappointed.

While not containing anything new technology-wise, the S5 is still an improvement on the S4. It’s also still the leader of the pack as far as power, capability and popularity goes.

The 5.1-inch smartphone has a full HD screen that has to be seen to be believed – it has to be the clearest, crispest, most detailed phone screen anywhere and it shows. Behind the screen is a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 2Gb of RAM, 16 or 32Gb of storage, MicroSD, 4G, GPS, NFC and a 16MP camera. The camera is clearer, more detailed and faster than that of the S4. According to Samsung, it has the fastest autofocus in the world at 0.3 seconds. It is also capable of shooting 4k video.

The S5 also includes a heart rate monitor and fingerprint sensor which is built into the home button and will work with a PayPal app to authorise mobile payments. The case measures 142 × 72.5 × 8.1mm, weighs 145g and is manufactured from pliable plastic. While not quite the premium feel of a metal case, it’s warm, soft and comfortable. It fits easily in the hand and doesn’t weight much, which is far more important.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 continues to be the Android flagship and runs Android KitKat with the Samsung TouchWiz overlay. Given the power of the processor, the OS is fluid, fast and a pleasure to use. There is no delay and not a loading screen in sight.

I think the latest Samsung smartphone is a great iteration for the brand and offers just enough improvement to warrant an upgrade.
