The Golden Gloves Fight Night, featuring international and local boxing champions, will be staged next Friday at the MFCC, Ta’ Qali.

The boxing bonanza, organised by Dixon’s Pain Academy in association with Prive Events, will feature an array of semi-professional and professional fighters.

The fight card lists some interesting match-ups including the bout between Scott Dixon and Philip Kotey and the anticipated re-match between Billy Corito and Taras Varava.

Malta’s very own golden boy, Franco Fenech will be up against England’s Ashvin Diolle as Jake Camilleri, Duncan Calleja, Michael Carter, Jamie Caruana, Clayton Vella and Keith Azzopardi will all get their chance to show their true worth on the night at the MFCC.

“Boxing is a serious business,” Dixon was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the organisers.

“It is a sport, but you don’t approach it like you would with tennis, cricket and golf.

“Boxers need to have desire, determination and devotion. A fighter’s regime begins with the morning run, continues in the afternoon at the gym and wraps up with an evening session of strength, conditioning and circuit training.”

Next Friday, Dixon will be defending his WBU Super Middleweight title against the number one challenger Kotey. The Ghana boxer will be here with a record of 27 wins from 29 fights, 22 victories coming after knock-outs.

Prive Events Management have established themselves among the leaders in their profession on the local market.

“The reason we decided to get involved in the Golden Gloves Fight Night was because we saw the potential in being a part of the entertainment side of this sporting event,” Jo Caruana, Privé Events spokeswoman said.

“Our aim is to raise the bar for this sport in Malta. Boxing has been attracting a good following here and is growing day by day.

“On Friday, many of our fighters will also compete for world titles so there’s no doubt that the country will be under the spotlight.”

Tickets for the Golden Gloves Fight Night may be purchased from Dixon’s Pain Academy, Ryan’s Pub, Living Well Hilton Malta or online from www.showshappening.com. One may also obtain more details by phoning 9924-2515 or 9982-1428.

Part of the proceeds from the fight night will go to young boxing enthusiast Javier Micallef who requires therapy for a rare condition in the UK.
