A Gozitan who lives in Xaghra was this afternoon remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of his former partner.

Xandru Mamo, 43 of Xaghra, also pleaded not guilty to grievously injuring 48-year-old Sylvia Zammit, also of Xaghra. The incident took place at around 7am yesterday at the victim’s residence in Guzeppi Grech Street.

The police found Ms Zammit lying on a bed suffering from head injuries. She had been stabbed with a screwdriver.

Mr Mamo was also charged with causing Ms Zammit and her son to fear for their lives and with relapsing.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli refused a request from defence lawyer Joseph Grech to grant the accused bail.
