Flyers played Playvolley in a women’s Super League match with both teams vying for the runners-up position in the championship standings.

The two contenders looked aggressive in attack from the first minute but they also laid particular focus on defence.

Playvolley won the match 3-2 (26-24, 16-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-13) but the fourth set was very critical for them as they drew the match level on 2-2 after a narrow 26-24 set score in favour.

This particular set offered a duel between Zarb (Flyers) and Borg (Playvolley) as both setters struck winners for their respective teams and launched offensive attacks.

After forcing a decisive fifth set, Playvolley looked the most confident team on court even though they had to play to their best to shrug off the Flyers’ challenge.

Flyers, in fact, had started very strongly and succeeded in opening a 7-2 lead.

But, Playvolley showed great resilience and drew level at 8-8.

Tension reigned supreme in the crucial phase of the set as the score was tied at 13-13. However, after a time out, Flyers committed two successive mistakes which, in the end, proved fatal.

The other match from the Wo-men’s League was less exciting with champions Fleur-de-Lys having the better of a young Paola team 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-19).

With the trophy in their bags, FDL took to the court rather complacent but they were still good enough to stay in control for the entire match.

The third set was the closest with Paola producing fine blocks, particularly through Spiteri and Gatt.

FDL, on their part, allowed plenty of time on court for all their fringe players to play a part in the celebrations match.

This was FDL’s first title ever.
