Foreign Minister George Vella yesterday welcomed the preliminary agreement for action to calm tensions in Ukraine, which was reached in Geneva on Thursday.

The US, EU, Ukraine and Russia agreed to establish a broad national dialogue to ensure the protection of people’s rights.

Dr Vella said that considering the dangerous political situation, the fact the parties got together to negotiate an agreement was already a positive sign. Many had believed the talks would fail.

The Maltese government had always expressed its belief in the diplomatic process and insisted a solution could only be found through dialogue, he said.
