Recently the Valletta local council and various other entities celebrated the 448th anniversary of the founding of Valletta by Grandmaster Jean Parisot de Valette.

The highlights of the events to mark this historic day were a Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral concelebrated by Archbishop Paul Cremona, the laying of wreaths next to the plaque of the foundation stone and the recognition of several individuals for their contribution towards the community and Valletta in general, at an event at the Museum of Fine Arts.

At the latter, Peter Caruana generously donated an oil on canvas portrait by his late father Joseph Anthony Caruana to the local council.

Mr Caruana was a humble artist of few words and great artistic capabilities. He lived in Valletta for over 50 years and was married to Maria née Sciberras who sadly passed away barely a year after his passing on.

In 1964 the acclaimed artist redesigned the flag of Malta incorporating the George Cross. He had exhibited in France and England apart from Australia. Well done to his son for this gesture.

Efforts are taking place to revive our world heritage city.

Concrete action has been taken by councillor Vince Fabri whose brainchild ‘Knights inthe City’, with live entertainment in various locations, was introduced last summer.

The concept of outdoor dining and socialising in the unique baroque ambience has gained much awaited momentum, giving Valletta a vibrant touch in our balmy evenings.
