Lately TVM showed a short feature about the Altar of Reposition that is put on show every year during Holy Week at the Mdina cathedral. The feature was accompanied by a very interesting historical description provided by Fr Edgar Vella.
Malta and Gozo are renowned for the various artistic ‘altars of reposition’ and many are those who visit them during these holy days. I would like to call to attention the other historical and artistic ‘altar of reposition’ that is displayed during Holy Week at the Gozo Cathedral.
Although not as sumptuous and sophisticated as the one at the Mdina Cathedral, the sepulkru in Gozo’s Cathedral is also a very important one. It was designed by the then Dean of the Cathedral Chapter Mgr. Giuseppe Farrugia (1852-1925) known as Tal-Vers.
Mgr Farrugia, besides being a member of Gozo’s Cathedral Chapter, served also as rector of the Gozo Seminary, Vicar General of the diocese and secretary to Bishop Giovanni M. Camilleri. He was benefactor of St George’s Parish as well as an able composer, designer and writer of Latin poetry.
The sepulkru at Gozo’s cathedral reflects the genius of this Gozitan cleric.
