Saviour Cachia has been appointed Information and Data Protection Commissioner.

Mr Cachia joined the civil service in 1976 and in 1998 led an inter-ministerial working group for the revision and evaluation of a bill on information practices.

Between 2000 and 2001 he was appointed member of an inter-ministerial committee on cyber legislation. Recently, he served as a member on several working groups including for the drawing up of data protection regulations for the police force to become a member of Europol and for similar regulations for the telecommunications sector.

He also took part in Malta’s negotiations with the EU on matters related to data protection.

Mr Cachia was involved in the implementation at national level of the Data Protection Act and has taken part in several conference on Data Protection.

His appointment is with effect from March 25.
