The Maltese Government has announced a substantial increase in the cash rebates to filmmakers who will now have the opportunity to benefit from a 25 per cent cash rebate with an additional two per cent if they feature Maltese cultural elements.

The new incentive scheme is subject to state aid approval.

Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, who is responsible for the Film Industry told a news conference this morning that the government wanted to consolidate its efforts to continue making Malta an attractive and viable location.

He reiterated that the government wanted to further develop the local film industry to ensure that the island offered the right tools and expertise for the industry to flourish.

The increase in the cash rebates, the launch of the co-production equity fund and the revamping of the film fund to support the local talent are a clear proof of Government’s vision for the industry.

Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech remarked that the cash rebate system given to qualifying productions would make Malta even more cost effective and provide producers with greater value for money.

During the press conference, the commission also presented its new logo as part of a re-branding exercise.

A new comprehensive industry guide was also launched, showcasing Malta’s benefits for the industry together with data and significant testimonials from producers who have filmed in Malta. The Film Commission will now start an international marketing campaign to promote Malta's Film Industry.

Described as Mediterranean’s mini Hollywood by the London Times, Malta, has a proven track record showing that the island has all it takes to serve as a European centre for film making.
