I read recently in this newspaper about the sick leave abuse. There is another side to the matter – employer abuse. Young graduates are being made to work exceedingly long hours with no extra pay, the excuse being they have a good salary.

These young people have spent their young lives studying, trying to achieve something for themselves and now with a degree or two under their belt they are made to work from 8.30/9am till 10pm and sometimes even later to meet deadlines.

They will meet deadlines alright – an early grave. They have no time for family life and it should be no wonder to anyone why so many marriages break up.

According to EU laws (EU Working Time Directive 2003/88/EC), a working week consists of 40 hours with no more than eight hours overtime against payment – one likes to assume.

Do the authorities concerned know of this blatant abuse? If they do not, it is high time they opened their eyes.
