On March 31, 2013, the last film for the public was screened at the Citadel cinema, in Victoria, with the hope, and a written promise, that it would be reopening after the upgrading. The film was Les Miserables (the musical phenomenon). It was a miserable and sad night indeed!

It was the end of an era because a year has passed and no beam of hope seems to be on the horizon at all! The cinema still hibernates happily.

It is a pity because it shows lack of interest and concern.

The long Gozitan cinema tradition came to an end abruptly on the island of Gozo that very March 31, 2013 night. Thank God the Oratory Don Bosco still manages to show family films on Sundays till May.

There is nothing we can do. We, poor Gozitans, are condemned to cross over to Malta not only for work, medical treatment or to go abroad. We also have to go to Malta even for entertainment, to watch a brand new film on the big screen! And no one seems able and prepared to change this situation notwithstanding all the promises that were made!
