Transport Malta is reviewing the legal framework regulating the placing of billboards.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi was replying to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Toni Bezzina, who had referred to a report in The Sunday Times of Malta on the proliferation of illegal billboards.

Mr Mizzi added that Transport Malta would also be seeking to update the legal framework with technological developments related to dynamic and LED screens.

Answering another PQ by Mr Bezzina on what Mepa and the Lands Department were doing about the same problem, Mr Mizzi said Mepa’s priority was to remove any illegal development in sensitive zones of heritage and environment, or wherever such illegalities could potentially affect the quality of neighbours’ lives.

He said daily fines were applicable on new illegal developments, including billboards put up after November 24, 2012.
