Already relegated Ħamrun Spartans lifted their low morale when they scored two early first-half goals to beat St George’s.

The Spartans won the match on merit as they were surely the better side throughout the match.

In the first half they played some wonderful football while on the restart they controlled proceedings.

After only three minutes Ħamrun were awarded a penalty when Emmanuel Sevasta handled the ball inside the area following a Glenn Azzopardi cross. Simon Shead converted from the spot to put the Spartans ahead.

Ħamrun continued to play the better football and managed to double the score on 15 minutes.

Justin Felice beat Ryan Marmara with a firm volley from just inside the area following another fine cross from Azzopardi.

St George’s came close to reduce the deficit midway through the half when Jurgen Gerada incredibly missed a sitter after he shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The Spartans responded with a Shead half-volley that just missed the target.

Five minutes before the break Marmara saved well from an Azzopardi volley.

Ħamrun took the foot off the pedal in the second half but were controlling the game quite easily even though the Saints could have pulled a goal back on 66 minutes when Giordano saw his shot well saved by Debattista.

On 80 minutes, Ħamrun almost made it 3-0 when following a good one two between Shead and Deanov the former was foiled by the Saints custodian.
