The Labour Party this afternoon appealed to the Opposition for a vote in favour of the Civil Unions Bill in Parliament tomorrow.

In a statement, it said that having failed to give this minority right in its 25 years in government, the Opposition should at least vote in favour of the bill and not be afraid of the progress a modern society based on the principle of social justice deserved.

It said it was significant that on the eve of such a historic moment, PN leader Simon Busuttil did not say one word about this right which ensured equality and destroyed prejudices.

Dr Busuttil, the PL said, was being more conservative than his predecessor who had agreed with the current Prime Minister that discrimination between couples of whatever sexual orientation should stop.

He lost control of the extremist forces within his party and was caught in a weak and difficult position, the PL said.
