When I saw the list of my fellow colleagues who were nominated for this award I felt privileged to be in such great and esteemed company

Last Monday he was announced as the winner of the Readers’ Award in the prestigious second annual International Opera Awards.

The 36-year-old triumphed over Polish tenor Piotr Beczala, American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, American soprano Renée Fleming, Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, Russian soprano Anna Netrebko and Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel.

Mr Calleja was overjoyed at the award: “When I saw the list of my fellow colleagues who were nominated for this award I of course felt privileged to be in such great and esteemed company.

“I thank everyone involved in this ‘operatic Oscar’ event for helping keep opera alive and kicking and a huge thank you to all of those who took time to vote.”

After a two-month stint in the UK, he will move on to Germany before returning to New York for the second time this year in the summer. He ends the year at the Royal Opera House once again.

Calleja’s annual Malta concert will be on July 18. His co-performers have not yet been announced, but the tenor has said on Twitter that he is thrilled by the line-up.
